Evaluation of second language learners' pronunciation using hidden Markov models

چکیده
In this study, Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) were used to evaluate pronunciation. Native and non-native speakers were asked to pronounce ten Dutch words. Each word was subsequently evaluated by an expert listener. Her main task was to decide whether a word was spoken by a native or a non-native speaker. For each word type, two versions of prototype HMMs were defined: one to be trained on tokens produced by a single native speaker, and another to be trained on tokens produced by a group of native speakers. For testing the different types of HMM, forced recognition was performed using native and non-native judged tokens. We expected that recognition with multispeaker HMMs would allow a more effective discrimination between native and non-native tokens than recognition with single-speaker models. A comparison of Equal Error Rates partly confirmed this hypothesis.

Computer Assisted Pronunciation Training
Computer Assisted Pronunciation Training systems have become popular tools to train on second languages. Many second language learners prefer to train on pronunciation in a stress free environment with no other listeners. There exists no such tool for training on pronunciation of the Norwegian language. Pronunciation exercises in training systems should be directed at important properties in th...

This study demonstrates how knowledge of language transfer can enable a computer-assisted pronunciation teaching (CAPT) system to effectively detect and diagnose salient mispronunciations in second language learners’ speech. Our approach uses a HMM-based speech recognizer with an extended pronunciation lexicon that includes both a model pronunciation for each word and common pronunciation varia...

Compared to traditional language education methodologies, CALL systems have many potential benefits. CALL systems are faster and cheaper which allow learners to get feedback immediately and study by themselves without requiring the sole attention of a teacher. In CALL systems, a good pronunciation evaluation method is needed to inform learners about their proficiency and to correct their pronun...

This study examined the impact of Clear Pronunciation 2 software on teaching English suprasegmental features, focusing on stress, rhythm and intonation. In particular, the software covers five topics in relation to suprasegmental features including consonant cluster, word stress, connected speech, sentence stress and intonation. Seven Iranian EFL learners participated in this study. The study l...
